On mom guilt

IMG_4844.JPG

I feel guilty for taking showers.

As a new mom, I feel like I’m supposed to spending that time with my family. I have a lot of “shoulds” that I should be doing with that time.

But taking a shower that’s hotter than lava makes me feel like a whole person. Just a few minutes taking care of myself allows me to recharge and, in return, spend better quality of time with my family.

I know this is a silly example, but it makes me wonder— What stories are we telling ourselves around why we don’t accept care?

Women can be terrible at taking.

Think about the way that mamas (and women as a whole) are usually praised:
- She sacrifices so much for her family
- She never asks for anything
- She’s so selfless
- She always puts everybody else first

As women, we are encouraged to give, give, give. When it comes to take, we almost don’t know how.

Do you feel uncomfortable when complimented?

Do you feel shame when someone offers help?

Do you feel guilt when given a gift?

What stories are surrounding these feelings? That we’re unworthy? Undeserving?

I’m here to tell you, boo, that these are not truth. As a human, you are deserving, worthy, and capable of receiving.

Yes, fill up your cup and put that oxygen mask on and recharge your batteries. But do it for YOU. Whether it allows you to better care for others (or not) should not determine your worth or the energy you give to yourself.

Give yourself permission to care and love on you today. Go for a (social distance-appropriate) walk. Let your kids have extra screen time so you can paint your toes. Shut the door when you go to the bathroom so you can have uninterrupted time. Make a meal that’s nourishing AND tastes good.

If you need support with taking care of you through eating well, I’d love to help. I help mamas with their nutrition so they can feel whole.

If this sounds like the step you needed to start your journey towards better health, let’s chat
